JOB SUMMARY
 
The FNC & FC JP Trauma Informed Cultural Support Worker (TICSW) will increase capacity to meet the specific needs of Class Member(s) and potential Class Member(s) seeking trauma-informed health and cultural supports, including support for children, youth, and families, both on-reserve and off-reserve.

KEY ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides frontline trauma-informed culturally safe, emotional and spiritual support and will focus on supporting Class Action Members: children, youth, and their families who are impacted by intergenerational trauma, and may be experiencing complex, and compounded grief, loss and trauma, disintegration and alienation of family, community and culture, and a broad spectrum of challenges rooted in systemic and historical inequities resulting in adverse social determinants of health.
  • Recognizing the generational nature of this compensation, mental health and cultural support will need to be available over the duration of the claims process and flexible to accommodate differing timelines on compensation and support needs as class members reach the age of majority.
  • Provide Cultural & Emotional Support
  • Conduct community outreach and workshops to inform claimants and their families about available health and cultural wellness support services offered provincially.
  • Provide cultural workshops, support groups, community connections and traditional wellness activities provincially for Class Member(s) and potential Class Member(s).
  • Traditional Healing Practices that provide access to traditional healers, medicine makers, or knowledge keepers for guidance on cultural practices, ceremonies, and remedies.
  • Receive warm referrals from the Deloitte Service Coordinators and FNHA
  • IS NOT: helping claimant(s) fill out settlement paperwork or advocacy

Develop Individual Care plans
  • Research various healing mechanisms
  • Incorporate both cultural & emotional support
  • Follow up and check in with Class Member (s)

Staff, Team Meetings, & Administrative Requirements
  • Attend Staff meeting and Training
  • Stay up to date on the Claims Settlement
  • Compile, disseminate data and records of all clients
  • Provide monthly and quarterly program activity report identifying issues, concerns and/or recommendations in relation to claimants, their families and communities
  • Have regular Check ins with your manager
  • Create a wholistic wellness plan and visit it regularly with your manager
  • Must be able to travel regularly
  • Programming needs will be reassessed often and changes will be made as needed

May also include:
  • Offer Land-Based Activities, workshops and gatherings focused on traditional land-based skills, such as hunting, fishing, plant gathering, and canoe building, in culturally significant locations.
  • Facilitate participation in seasonal ceremonies, coming of age ceremonies and celebrations for Class Members and their families to attend that is culturally relevant or comfortable for them and suitable to their needs.
  • Pair youth with Elders for mentorship and cultural learning, fostering intergenerational knowledge transfer.
  • Potentially accompany claimant(s) to cultural camps held by communities willing to invite others in.
  • Traditional Nutrition and Medicine Workshops for Class Members to learn traditional food and medicine preparation methods and recipes, integrating cultural knowledge about health and nutrition.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Required knowledge of Effective Community Cultural Etiquette and Protocols
  • Required knowledge of cultural healing methods/practices in responding to trauma (taken or willing to take training., i.e., IFOT (Indigenous Focusing Orienting Therapy)
  • Two (2) or more years of Trauma Informed training and/or Counselling experience with Indigenous clients
  • Social Work degree, a Social Science certificate/diploma and/or; equivalent experience, an asset
  • Extensive working knowledge of the history and impacts of residential schooling and effective methods for working with survivors.
  • Knowledge of – and/or previous training in – relevant topics such as depression, anxiety, suicide intervention, relationship concerns, addictions, self-injury, and LGBTQ+ issues
  • Be Double Vaccinated
  • Must undergo and pass a VULNERABLE Criminal Record Check

  • Excellent Computer literacy and knowledge with Microsoft Office and Internet
  • Knowledge of Aboriginal cultural and political environment

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment

  • High degree of integrity and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and maintain a positive and professional attitude.
  • Must be well organized and keep a good recording system.
  • Must have the ability to meet deadlines; manage time effectively to multitask many directives and projects at once.
  • A Valid BC Driver’s License and Must Own Vehicle and unencumbered ability to Travel areas.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and proven ability to establish rapport with people of all educational and occupational backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain a healthy working relationship with staff, community representatives/members and representatives of other organizations. Including collaboration with other IRSSS programs and staff as required.
  • Maintain the confidentiality guidelines of all records, materials and communications concerning clients, staff and IRSSS.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Term: Full-Time One (1) Term Position - 12 Month Contract Agreement
Location: Vancouver – Vancouver Public Library Office.
Salary: $60,000.00 to $65,000.00 to start and dependent on experience.
Benefits: Annual Leave, Wellness Days, after 90 days - Employer paid benefits plan and GIC matched savings.
Status: Hybrid position.
