Position Summary

The Development Manager performs the strategic development function and drives its fundraising efforts to secure the resources needed to advance the organization’s work. The Development Manager reports to the Chief Financial Officer and performs day-to-day activities to build and maintain sustainable revenue in partnership with all level of donors, foundations, corporate partners.
The Development Manager works closely with Management, Finance and Administration, Communications and other departments to build the organization’s objectives. Specifically, this job function must maintain a close relationship with other job functions to develop and leverage relationships that result in meeting or exceed target fund raising goals that ensure the organization’s projects and core operations are appropriately and sustainably resourced.
The Development Manager has knowledge of the existing local, regional and national funding community in Canada and how a comprehensive not-for-profit operation prioritizes, launches, and maintains a selection of the following: campaigns, annual reports, planned giving and donations and grants. Work is performed under supervision and is reviewed to ensure conformance with established procedures and practices, accuracy and completeness. Advice, direction and mentoring are provided by the Chief Financial Officer and Development Consultant.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Development Manager position involves three (3) main areas of responsibility.
1)    Fundraising
  • Develop compelling proposals, reports and budgets, for high-net-worth people, foundations, and corporate fundraising, including sponsorships that articulate the organization’s accomplishments and aspirations
  • Develop policies and procedures that reflect ethical fundraising practices
  • Implement fundraising activities:
  • Use ethical fundraising principles
  • Oversee the planning and execution of special fundraising events specified in a fund development plan
  • Engage volunteers for special fund development projects using established volunteer management practices
  • Manage all deadlines, workflows, and project plans for fundraising activities including:
  • Internal timelines for collection of information
  • Timely completion schedules
  • Projection of successful achievement of funding requests
  • Work with staff to track grant deliverables
  • Participate in the development and implementation of a IRSSS major gift and individual donor program
  • Participate in the planning and coordination of creative, strategic, and meaningful appeals, campaigns, and activities to engage new and existing donors both online and in-person

2)    Maintain and build positive relationships.
  • Understand all aspects of the organization’s Mission
  • Work collaboratively with the Communications Manager to create impactful storytelling and communications methods to convey the power of collaborative action to external partners
  • Steward and leverage relationships with existing funders that result in meeting or exceeding target fundraising goals
  • Actively seek to deepen current donor relationships and forge new ones
  • Support the management team, and Board members in relationship development with high net worth people, foundation and corporate funders and major donors, including: researching prospects; developing presentations and information packages; scheduling and participating in meetings and site visits.
  • Work with the Communications Manager and Team to:
  • develop a comprehensive communications plan to promote the organization to its donors and maximize public awareness of the fundraising activities of the organization.
  • prepare or oversee the development of high-quality donor communications materials that demonstrate deep knowledge of the organization’s programs and promote its Mission, (e.g. solicitation materials, thank you letters, annual reports)
  • Through the Communications Manager develop web, newsletter, and social media content to:
  • market the organization
  • promote fundraising activities
  • acknowledge donors and funders
  • Develop and maintain relationship management systems that increase the organization’s capacity to cultivate and sustain meaningful relationships with donors and funders.

3)    Coordinate strategy and reporting
  • Foster an understanding of philanthropy within the organization
  • Collaborate with the management and teams to create a fund development plan which increases revenues to support the strategic priorities of the organization
  • Monitor and report the progress of the fund development plan
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend new fundraising opportunities and tactics in alignment with the organization’s values, strategic priorities, and program work
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date donor and fundraising data in a Customer Relations Management-type database that respects the privacy and confidentiality of donor information
  • Assist the leadership team in preparing fundraising reports and materials for the Executive Director;
  • Establish relationships with internal parties such as the Program Managers, and Committees:
  • determine efficient means of communication;
  • exchange information, reports etc. as needed
  • Meet with Finance personnel:
  • Raise any issues, challenges, or opportunities for improvements, track results of fundraising efforts through financial reports
  • Participate in management and staff team meetings.
  • Identify project achievements and challenges by reviewing project reports, submitting agenda items and preparing background information
  • Celebrate successes and troubleshoot challenges with staff team
  • Agree to take on assignments or tasks
  • Follow-up on action items by completing tasks and documenting results
  • Chair or manage appropriate meetings or committees

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Post-secondary certification in Fundraising Management; Project Management; Business Administration or equivalent years of actual experience in a fundraising/development role within a non-profit organization.
  • A relevant Bachelor degree will be considered an asset.
  • Three (3) years of increasing responsibility in a not-for-profit development role with a demonstrated track record of meeting fundraising goals
  • Experience working in a cross-cultural environment, and with First Nations organization and communities
  • Experience with Not-for-profit grant writing and individual giving programs and managing government grants and contracts
  • Familiarity with and existing relationships within the Greater Vancouver funding community
  • Fundraising management; project management; management of volunteer resources
  • Legislation affecting Canadian charities and not-for-profit organizations
  • Highly organized and adept at managing projects and events from concept through implementation.
  • Knowledge of the Association of Fundraising Professionals Code of Ethics
  • Indigenous culture/specific First Nations member community cultures
  • Understanding of how a not-for-profit society operates
  • Complete understanding of Internet usage and network navigation
  • Microsoft Office suite with advanced-level Excel and Word skills
  • Exceptional, authentic, and persuasive communicator, orally and in writing
  • Excellent writing, speaking, listening, presenting skills
  • Troubleshooting, problem/issue identification, analysis
  • Passionate about the work of the organization and excited to help it secure new and sustainable funding streams
  • An empathetic understanding listener of funders’ needs and interests, and energized by the creative challenge of storytelling to engage and motivate supporters

  • Proven ability to establish rapport with people of all educational and occupational backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain a healthy working relationship with staff, community stakeholders and representatives of other organizations.
  • Maintain the confidentiality guidelines of all records, materials and communications concerning clients, staff and IRSSS

Term: Full-Time Term Position - Vancouver
Salary: Depending on education and experience
